Are Vaccinations for Rabies Important?

We’ve all heard of Rabies, but what exactly is it, and is it a vaccination you should be considering before travelling? At TouchWood Pharmacy, we run travel clinics to include rabies vaccination Northampton so that you can be sure you have protected your health prior to travelling.

What Is Rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted by infected mammals including dogs and bats, who bite their victim and pass the virus into their peripheral nerves. The virus then travels along the nerve until it reaches the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, causing catastrophic damage. Symptoms generally appear within three months of being bitten. Signs include confusion, inability to move and loss of consciousness, and once symptoms appear the disease almost always leads to death.

In 2015, over 17,000 people died as a result of rabies worldwide. It is therefore not an illness to take any chances with.

Rabies Vaccine

A well respected vaccine for rabies is available, and it is recommended that anyone at risk of being bitten by an infected animal, such as those working in rural conditions or within animal sanctuaries, receive the vaccination prior to leaving the UK. Rabies vaccination Northolt costs just £55 per dose.
