Shingles

The NHS offers the shingles vaccination to very specific groups of people, but you may wish to book shingles immunisation yourself if you fall outside these groups. Only people aged 70 or 78 years old can get the shingles vaccine on the NHS, but it is recommended for anyone aged over 60 and is available from your local branch of Touchwood Pharmacy. Unlike the flu jab, it can be given at any time of year.

What is Shingles?

Shingles are caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. Chickenpox is a common childhood viral illness that lies dormant in the nerves within the body after chickenpox infection. Later in adulthood, it can reactivate and cause a very painful rash in a specific area of the body. It can also lead to symptoms including headache, fever and malaise.
