The Difference Between Viral And Bacterial Meningitis

viral meningitis

Meningitis is an infection that many of us fear for ourselves or our children. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria and causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. The complications of viral meningitis can include deafness, loss of limbs and brain damage. In severe cases, it can lead to death. Luckily, we offer the meningitis B vaccine for children, and to protect against group C, the meningitis vaccine for students and children at our pharmacy in Northolt.

Viral and Bacterial Meningitis

Viral meningitis is most commonly caused by gastrointestinal viruses, but can also occur following mumps, measles or varicella infections. Often there is no specific treatment and patients require supportive management in the hospital.

Bacterial meningitis is caused by meningococcal bacteria and can be more serious. Treatment includes antibiotics and may require intensive medical management. Luckily, vaccines are available to prevent bacterial meningitis caused by meningococcal group B and group C bacteria.

Meningitis B

A common form of meningitis in children, the meningitis B vaccine was rolled out across the NHS a few years ago. Unfortunately, only babies and a select other group were eligible for the vaccination meaning that many children have not been able to take advantage of the protection available for this infection. At our Northolt branch, we offer the meningitis B vaccine privately for anyone wishing to protect their child’s health. Attending for this vaccination can give you peace of mind that your child is protected from this awful disease.

Meningitis C

Meningitis C is caused by meningococcal group C bacteria and is a vaccination offered to babies and adolescents or students at university. There are many reasons why you or your child may have missed this vaccination, but it is easy to book for the private meningitis vaccine for students and children in Northolt. Whether you are about to leave for university or have already started, it’s not too late to attend for meningitis C vaccination.
