The chickenpox vaccination protects against the disease. The vaccination contains a weakened version of the varicella virus, which causes chickenpox. When the vaccination is delivered, the immune system responds to this piece and produces antibodies against the virus. So, if the body comes into contact with the chickenpox virus again, the immune system is already prepared to fight it off before it produces a chickenpox illness.

Who can catch chickenpox?

While chickenpox is most typically contracted during childhood, but it can be developed by individuals of any age. Symptoms usually worsen with age, and adults typically have much worse symptoms than children.
