Becoming unwell on holiday is the last thing you want to think about, but in certain areas of the world, tropical diseases are endemic.

Protecting yourself and your family with vaccination is the best choice you can make to guard against illness. With hepatitis travel vaccination, you can leave the UK with peace of mind.

Hepatitis Symptoms

Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver, and there are a number of causes of this. Commonly, it is caused by viral infections, including hepatitis A and B. The virus attacks the liver cells, causing inflammation and preventing the liver from processing the body’s waste products efficiently. Hepatitis symptoms are usually non-specific flu-like symptoms including joint pains, abdominal pain and lethargy. Yellowing of the skin and eyes, jaundice, is also seen. In severe cases, hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis, or scarring, of the liver.

Hepatitis B is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, and is often transmitted sexually. Care must be taken if you require hospital treatment whilst travelling, as it can also be transmitted through instruments contaminated with another person’s blood. Hepatitis A is transmitted via the faecal-oral route, often as a result of poor sanitation or poor hand-washing facilities.

Hepatitis Treatment

Hepatitis treatment is generally supportive, including rest, a high calorie diet, and occasionally intravenous fluids in hospital. Hepatitis A can last for one to two months, and hepatitis B lasts for three to four months. Whether you’re going away for a fortnight or a year, contracting hepatitis is certainly something you will want to avoid by having both the hepatitis A vaccine and the hepatitis B vaccine.
