Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread via contaminated water. Salmonella in the faeces of a person with typhoid contaminates food or drinks as a result of poor hand hygiene or poor sanitation, allowing the infection to spread to others. Symptoms begin six to thirty days later, and might include loss of appetite, high fever, abdominal pain, exhaustion and eventually emaciation. Symptoms tend to last for around four weeks, and can easily ruin the trip of a lifetime.
Typhoid fever treatment involves oral rehydration and antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Doctors worldwide are seeing antibiotic resistance with typhoid, and so subsequent courses of antibiotics are sometimes required to treat the infection. In severe cases, bowel damage can occur requiring surgery.
In 2015, over 12 million cases of typhoid were seen, and many of these affected children. Typhoid is thought by some to have been around since 450BC in ancient Greece, when a plague killed a third of the Athens population. It is now endemic to Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and the typhoid vaccine is strongly recommended for anyone travelling to these, and other, high risk areas.
