Although most of us will have had our childhood vaccinations, travel vaccinations including yellow fever are different and not included in the childhood schedule. Recommended before travel to Africa, South America or Asia, the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory for entry to some countries and is a vaccination you’ll want to get ticked off your list before you step onto a plane.

What Is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by the aedes aegypti mosquito. An infected mosquito spreads the virus when it bites a human or primate. The initial symptoms may seem fairly harmless, but it can soon develop into something more sinister. From painful muscles to a severe headache with fever and nausea, yellow fever is sure to spoil any trip you make and can even be fatal. In severe cases, the virus can lead to internal bleeding, liver damage, and yellowing of the eyes (giving it the name yellow fever). The World Health Organisation noted that in 2013, 127,000 people were infected with yellow fever, and 45,000 died from it, mostly in Africa.

Yellow fever can have devastating consequences.  Worryingly there is no known cure, and hospital treatment or admission to intensive care may be required for those who become infected. This is why it is so important to ensure you are fully vaccinated before beginning your trip.

It is most prevalent in developing countries, due to difficulties in maintaining hygiene and lack of available insecticides to get rid of mosquitoes.
