Premature Ejaculation (PE)
Premature ejaculation is a common problem in men of all ages in the UK where ejaculation is reached too early during sexual activity. This can be within one or two minutes of starting intercourse.
Premature ejaculation can be confused with erectile dysfunction (ED) and some men have both. Erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting an erection whereas PE has no difficulty getting an erection it is just a case of firing too quickly.
The time taken for sexual activity is massively variable so deciding whether your ejaculation is too early is not easy and a very sensitive and embarrassing subject. Men who have premature ejaculation find it very difficult to control or delay orgasm. In a study of 500 couples without erectile problems the time taken between entry and ejaculation averaged five and a half minutes. (NHS CHOICES)
However, each couple would need to decide for themselves whether they are happy with their own circumstances. If premature ejaculation is happening infrequently then that would be considered normal and does not require treatment. If more than half of your sexual attempts result in premature ejaculation then medication may be worth trying.
