Psoriasis and Eczema

Psoriasis is a non-infective recurring skin condition that typically affects the knees, elbows and scalp. It causes red and flaky patches to develop and cannot be cured. Emollients must be used to treat the dryness. Steroids can be used to treat small areas for short periods for itch and inflammation. (8 weeks with a minimum break of 4 weeks) Vitamin D preparations can be used to treat the psoriasis. Salicyclic acid and coal tar preparations can also be used. Eczema is a non-infective recurring skin condition which affects the face, the inside of the elbows, the back of the knees and other parts of the body. It causes dryness, redness, itching and cracking of the skin. As with psoriasis emollients must be used to treat the dryness. Use frequently and liberally. Steroids can be used to treat small areas for short periods.
