About Champix (Varenicline) Tablets

How does Champix work?

Champix (Vareniciline) is a partial nicotinic receptor agonist. It stops nicotine from binding to nicotinic receptors and so reduces the symptoms of withdrawal and craving when nicotine is not being inhaled. By blocking the receptors Champix also reduces the rewarding effects of smoking.

Champix is not a nicotine based product.

How do I take Champix?

You begin with the Champix starter pack which increases the dosage over the first 2 weeks. Once you have completed the Champix starter pack you continue with 1mg twice daily for a total course of 12 weeks.

You must stop smoking 7 to 14 days after starting Champix.

For people who find the 1mg too strong there is a 0.5mg strength which is taken twice daily.

At the end of the 12 weeks course it may be worth reducing the dosage slowly rather than stopping abruptly to minimise the chances of relapse.

Some patients will need extra help to abstain from smoking after 12 weeks and may require an extended course up to a maximum of 24 weeks.
