Planning the trip of a lifetime might be one of the most exciting things you ever do, and looking after your health both before you go and during your trip are of paramount importance. At our yellow fever clinic in Camberley, Touchwood Pharmacy can offer expert advice on travel vaccinations before you leave the UK.
What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow fever is an infectious disease found mostly in the tropics and subtropics. It is a virus spread by female mosquitoes of the aedes aegypti species. Mosquitoes become infected by biting a person with the disease; they can then pass the virus on to the next person they bite. Early symptoms include headaches, muscle aches and pains, a fever and nausea, and can therefore be easily confused with other viral illnesses. The infection can quickly become more serious, however, causing internal bleeding or liver damage. It gets its name from the yellowing that can be seen in the whites of the eyes.
In 2013, there were 127,000 severe infections and around 45,000 deaths. There is no known cure, and it can lead to a traveller requiring admission to hospital and even intensive care. Making sure you have received your yellow fever vaccine before you travel is therefore of utmost importance.
Yellow Fever Vaccine
This vaccine is well respected. It is believed to provide protection within ten days of being administered, and one vaccination provides lifelong immunity. The incidence of the infection has increased in recent decades, possibly due to denser populations living within cities, and increased movement of people. Some countries have made vaccination compulsory to prevent the introduction or spread of the virus within that country. Our experienced pharmacists at our Camberley pharmacy can provide the most up to date travel advice for the yellow fever vaccine.
