What Are the Symptoms of Meningitis B?

Meningitis B can start off with small, early showing symptoms and grow into a life-threatening emergency within as little as a few hours. Knowing what to look out for could potentially save your life, or the lives of those around you.

Look out for:

  • High fever with cold hands and feet
  • Severe headache and stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Vomiting and drowsiness
  • A red or purple rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it

If you or someone you know shows these symptoms, call 999 or go to A&E immediately. Do not wait for a rash to appear.

Even when treated quickly, Meningitis B can cause lasting complications including hearing loss, brain damage, and limb amputation. Vaccination is the most effective protection against these nasty symptoms and side effects.

Should I get a Meningitis B vaccine?

The MenB vaccine is recommended for:

  • Babies and young children: You should be covered by the NHS to have these vaccines.
  • Children aged 11+ and university students: Those moving into shared accommodation, like housing and dorms, will face a higher risk of contracting this infection.
  • Adults: Those without prior vaccination or with underlying health conditions are at greater risk when exposed.
  • People with weakened immune systems: Including those without a functioning spleen may be affected.
  • Close contacts of a confirmed MenB case. You may need to isolate to keep those around you safe, even if you display no symptoms, you might still be a carrier.

Not sure if you or your child needs the vaccine? Our pharmacists will review your vaccination history and advise on the right course for you.

FAQs

Meningitis B, or MenB for short, is a serious bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can also lead to critical complications like septicaemia (blood poisoning), which can become more life-threatening within as little as 24 hours, so it’s important to act fast once you see the signs. It most commonly affects babies and young children, though teenagers and adults can also be at risk. Vaccination with Bexsero is the most effective way to protect against it.
No, they protect against different strains. MenB (Bexsero) covers meningococcal group B, which is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK. MenACWY covers groups A, C, W, and Y, which are less common. Both of these vaccines are in stock and available at Touchwood Pharmacy, and our vaccination team will help guide you towards which vaccine is right for you.
Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, and fatigue. These side effects usually tend to pass within a few days. For infants, make sure you give them infant paracetamol to reduce any chances of fever. Serious reactions to this vaccine are very rare.
This depends on age. Children and adults aged 2 and over typically need 2 doses, at least one month apart. Our pharmacists will advise on the right schedule for you at your appointment and get you booked in.
