What is the Meningitis ACWY vaccine?

The Odiham Meningitis vaccine clinic is designed to administer the meningitis ACWY vaccine as a preventive measure designed to protect against several types of bacteria that can cause the disease meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Meningitis is a swelling of tissue that surrounds the brain and can be caused by exposure to bacteria that infects this area. While there are a number of bacteria that cause meningitis, the bacteria can be easily spread. The meningitis ACWY vaccine covers four common types of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.

Is the Meningitis ACWY vaccine available from the NHS in the UK?

This is a complicated question. Vaccine recommendations and schedules have changed over the years and vary in different parts of the country. Previous immunisation with a Meningitis ACWY vaccination will depend on your age and where in the country you have happened to live.

If you are unsure about your vaccination status, speak to your NHS GP surgery who should have a record of your vaccination history. For further advice we recommend speaking to our specialised travel pharmacist at one of our travel clinics well in advance of your travel. In Hampshire, your closest clinic is located at the Touchwood Pharmacy Odiham Meningitis vaccination service located in High Street, Odiham, Hook, RG29.

What is the recommended schedule for receiving the Meningitis ACWY vaccine for travel purposes?

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is usually given as a single dose. The timing of the vaccine can vary based on individual risk factors, travel plans, and guidelines. It’s important to consult one of our travel healthcare professionals to determine the appropriate vaccination schedule based on your individual travel plans.
