Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection carried by the Culex mosquito in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. It is transmitted to humans via mosquito bites, and can lead to symptoms around one to two weeks later. It is sometimes known as Japanese fever as it causes high temperatures, headaches and vomiting. Encephalitis refers to inflammation of the brain, and when this occurs signs include seizures, confusion and limb weakness. Half of people with symptoms are left with permanent neurological damage, which could include deafness of limb paralysis.
There is no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis, but many people with the infection will need admission to hospital. This can be worrying in a foreign country, especially if you do not speak the language. Treatment is supportive and may include help with breathing or nutrition as required. Medication to treat and prevent seizures may also be needed.
The best way to avoid Japanese encephalitis is to attend for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine prior to leaving the UK.
