Yellow fever is a virus spread by the female mosquito found in the tropics and subtropics. The aedes aegypti mosquito becomes infected with yellow fever by biting an infected person or primate, and then passes it on by biting another person. Within days, symptoms appear and might include the flu-like symptoms of aching joints and muscles, headaches, loss of appetite and a fever. Later, the virus can cause internal bleeding and liver damage.
The World Health Organisation estimated that 45,000 people died from yellow fever in 2013, the majority of whom were in Africa. Cases of yellow fever have risen since the 1980s, possibly due to fewer people being immune, more people living in cities, and more movement of people.
Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory for entry to some countries in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease. The vaccine has been used widely across the globe, and is believed to provide protection from ten days after the date of vaccination. One dose of the vaccine is thought to provide lifelong immunity against yellow fever, meaning that once you’ve had the vaccination, you’ll also beprotected for any trips you decide to make in the future.
