After How Many Days Can a Person Travel Following a Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Yellow Fever - Touchwood Pharmacy

Yellow fever is found in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, South America, and Trinidad in the Caribbean. Fortunately, yellow fever is easily preventable with a single vaccine into the upper arm. If you are looking for the yellow fever vaccination in Northampton or the yellow fever vaccination in Streatham, then visit Touchwood Pharmacy’s travel clinic where we offer other vaccinations for overseas holidays and trips as well. Touchwood Pharmacy also has a yellow fever vaccination clinic in Sydenham.

It is a requirement before travel to certain parts of the world to have the yellow fever vaccine and this must be evidenced by an accompanying certificate which is issued by the vaccination clinic to prove that the vaccine has been administered. The yellow fever vaccine should be given ten days before travel allowing the vaccination to be effective. Countries that require certification will not usually permit entry until a period of ten days has elapsed from the date of the vaccine administration. If you also need to have the MMR vaccine, then you will need to wait for a period of four weeks before administering the yellow fever vaccine and then wait a further ten-day period before travel for the certificate to be valid.

The Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

This certificate is known by its official name, the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (CVP). Vaccination certificates are valid for life even older versions which show an expiry date.  Not all countries require a vaccination certificate, but you should check before you travel.

Further Safety Precautions When you Travel

Even if you have had the yellow fever vaccination, you should still take care to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes whilst you are abroad. Yellow fever is caused by the bite from infected mosquitoes.

Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease typically short in duration for most people causing flu-like symptoms including fever, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, and muscle pains although not everyone experiences symptoms. A small percentage of sufferers will go onto enter a more toxic phase with death a possibility for around half of these patients.
