Early Signs & Symptoms of Yellow Fever

Early Signs & Symptoms of Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever is a serious infection spread by mosquitoes. It is found in parts of Africa, South America, Central America and Trinidad. Yellow Fever can be prevented by vaccination and Touchwood Pharmacy offers the yellow fever vaccination at their travel health clinic in Camberley. You can also have the yellow fever vaccination at our clinic in Hanwell.

Signs and Symptoms of Yellow Fever

The first signs of yellow fever develop three to six days, on average, after being bitten. The symptoms include:

·         High temperature

·         Headache

·         Feeling sick and actual vomiting

·         Backache

·         General muscle pain

·         Sensitivity to light

·         Loss of appetite

·         A general feeling of malaise and being unwell

Around a quarter of people who contract yellow fever go on to develop more serious symptoms including yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes which is called jaundice, vomiting blood or bleeding from the mouth, nose, ears or eyes.

The treatments for yellow fever include symptomatic relief such as painkillers to relieve temperature and aches and pains, rest and plenty of hydration.  There is no specific cure for yellow fever and around half the number of people who go on to develop more of the serious symptoms of yellow fever, will die.  If more serious symptoms develop then this requires immediate hospitalization.

Yellow Fever Prevention

Yellow fever can be easily prevented with the yellow fever vaccine and this is available from Touchwood Pharmacy’s yellow fever clinic in Camberley and yellow fever clinic in Hanwell. Some countries will require a certificate proving that you have received the yellow fever vaccination before you will be admitted. You need to have the vaccination at least ten days before you travel and the certificate will not be valid until ten days have elapsed. The vaccine and certificate are only available from registered yellow fever vaccination centres. One vaccine provides lifelong protection so there is not usually a requirement to repeat the injection or receive a booster.
