The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is far more contagious than previous variants so it is important to still take precautions even as the country moves away from mandated restrictions.
Safety Precautions
- Getting the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your loved ones. Those who are vaccinated are less likely to get the virus and to spread it. If you do contract the virus, the symptoms will be less intense than they would be if you were unvaccinated.
- Wearing a mask reduces the spread of COVID-19 and protects people around you. Any time you are in a public indoor space, it is recommended you wear a mask over your mouth and nose.
- Social distancing isn’t always possible, but if you’re going to be somewhere busy like a restaurant or pub, go during off-peak hours. You can also shop online for just about everything and have it delivered to your doorstep.
- It was lonely not being able to see people outside of our “bubbles” so you may not want to go back to that. If you do socialise, try to do so outdoors or in well ventilated places. You can also take a COVID-19 test before visits and ask others to take them as well, especially if you’re going to be visiting the elderly or vulnerable.
COVID-19 Testing
PCR Test: These are diagnostic tests where a cotton swab is used to get a sample from your nasopharyngeal cavity. This sample is then sent to a lab to check whether the coronavirus is present. It is the most reliable form of COVID-19 testing, but it does take longer than other tests.
Rapid Antigen Test: An antigen test is the most widely used because you can get results in as little as 15 minutes. It will only detect the virus if there is a high viral load count so if you receive a positive result then you can trust that result. If it is negative, it may just mean you don’t have a high enough viral load count.
