Typhoid Fever: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Typhoid Fever: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can spread rapidly throughout the body and affect all of the major organs. Without prompt treatment, it can cause serious complications and in some cases will prove fatal.  There are two types of vaccines available in the UK that provide some protection against typhoid fever. If you are looking for the typhoid vaccination in Bromley then visit our typhoid vaccination clinic in Bromley. We also have a typhoid vaccination clinic in Streatham.

What causes typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella typhi which is a relative of the bacteria that causes the food poisoning, Salmonella. The bacteria is passed from an infected person via their stools and is highly contagious. It is commonly transmitted in areas of poor sanitation and/or food hygiene during the preparation of food.

Symptoms include a very high temperature, headache, general aches and pains, a cough and constipation or diarrhoea. Some people develop a rash. If typhoid isn’t treated then the symptoms will worsen and there is a possibility that fatal complications could follow.

What is the treatment for typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is usually treated with antibiotics and if it is caught early enough then treatment can often take place at home. More serious cases or cases which have become well established will probably require hospital admission so that antibiotics can be administered intravenously. If the disease remains untreated there is around a 20% death rate, although, in the UK, death from typhoid is virtually unheard of.

The Prevention of Typhoid Fever

There is a vaccine available to protect against typhoid although it is still recommended that you are very careful with hand hygiene and food preparation if you visit high-risk areas where typhoid is endemic. It is also recommended to only drink bottled water.

The Typhoid Travel Vaccine

There are two vaccines available in the UK which can provide some protection against typhoid fever, one is a single injection and the other is three capsules taken on alternate days. Neither vaccine offers 100% protection so it is still important to follow precautions when you travel.
