What is Non-allergic Rhinitis?

What is Non-allergic Rhinitis?

Non-allergic rhinitis is a type of nasal inflammation that isn’t caused by exposure to allergens like pollen or pet dander. It makes the blood vessels in the nose become inflamed, leading to a buildup of fluid in your nasal tissue. The symptoms are often similar to those of nasal allergies and hay fever so it is not uncommon for people to confuse non-allergic rhinitis with those conditions.

Symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Post-nasal drip
  • A drippy nose
  • A sore nose
  • Coughing and sneezing

Unlike allergies, non-allergic rhinitis is not caused by an immune system response. While the exact cause of non-allergic rhinitis isn’t known, it has been linked to colds and flu, the weather, and changes in hormone levels. Environmental factors can be common triggers as well, such as:

  • Chlorine
  • Pollution
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Aerosols
  • Cleaning products
  • Perfumes
  • Wood smoke

Non-allergic Rhinitis Treatment

If the symptoms are mild, you can manage them with over-the-counter medications available from your local pharmacy or with lifestyle changes. However, if the symptoms are more severe and reduce your quality of life, you may need to see an ENT doctor and/or use stronger medications like steroid nasal sprays.

The diagnosis of non-allergic rhinitis usually comes about after other conditions like allergies or nasal deformities are ruled out. Your ENT doctor may suggest you undergo allergy tests or nasal endoscopy.

Once diagnosed, you will need to be mindful of your condition as there is no cure for it. In addition to taking over the counter and prescription medications, you should try your best to avoid your triggers. Let family, friends, and co-workers know so that exposure to things like cleaning sprays and perfumes is reduced.

Nasal irrigation can be beneficial for reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis like a drippy nose and post-nasal drip. Done at least once a day, nostrils are rinsed out with a saline solution. Be sure to use distilled or sterilized water and to clean any equipment after each use.
