Can Your Child Still Get Meningitis B Even After Two Doses of the Vaccine?

meningitis b risk after two vaccine doses in children

If your little one has already had their first two MenB jabs, it is natural to feel reassured that they have some protection against meningitis B. But you may still find yourself wondering, “Could they get it anyway?” The answer is yes, although it is uncommon. The MenB vaccine greatly reduces the risk, but it cannot protect against every case, so knowing the signs to look out for is still important.

It can be worrying to think about your child becoming seriously unwell, especially when they have already had their vaccinations. The good news is that vaccination offers valuable protection, and knowing what to look for can help you act quickly if your child ever becomes unwell.

How Does the Meningitis B Vaccine Protect Your Child?

The Meningitis B vaccine teaches your child’s immune system to recognise meningococcal group B bacteria, a common cause of meningitis and sepsis in young children in the UK. On the NHS schedule, babies receive doses at 8 and 12 weeks, followed by a booster at one year.

The second dose was moved from 16 weeks to 12 weeks in July 2025 to provide earlier protection during a period when babies are particularly vulnerable. You can read more about how the MenB vaccine works and who it is suitable for.

Can a Child Get Meningitis B After the Vaccine?

Yes, it is possible, although it is uncommon. The vaccine protects against most strains of MenB bacteria, rather than every strain, and no vaccine provides 100% protection.

Why Protection Is Not Complete

Protection is strong but not absolute because:

  • The vaccine does not cover every strain of MenB bacteria
  • Every child’s immune response is slightly different
  • Protection can be lower before the full recommended course has been completed

Why the One Year Booster Matters

The booster is an important part of the routine NHS MenB schedule and helps maintain protection after the first two doses. If your child has missed it, speak to your GP practice about catching up rather than assuming they are fully covered.

How Effective Is the MenB Vaccine?

Meningitis B vaccine effectiveness has been encouraging since the NHS programme began in 2015, with a substantial reduction in MenB disease among vaccinated children. GOV.UK reports a 75% reduction in MenB disease in groups eligible for vaccination in the early years of the programme. More recent JCVI evidence estimates vaccine effectiveness at around 83% against MenB disease.

However, the MenB vaccine only protects against group B. Other causes of meningitis and sepsis are not covered by MenB vaccination, which is why routine vaccinations and awareness of symptoms remain important. Our guide to the difference between the ACWY and MenB vaccines explains this in more detail.

What Are the Symptoms of Meningitis B in Children?

Meningitis B symptoms can appear suddenly and worsen within hours, so trust your instincts even if your child is fully vaccinated. Signs of meningitis B in children include:

  • High temperature with cold hands and feet
  • Vomiting or refusing feeds
  • Unusual drowsiness or being difficult to wake
  • Floppiness, irritability or a high pitched cry in babies
  • A stiff neck or dislike of bright lights
  • A rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it

Not every child develops a rash, so never wait for one to appear. If your child has symptoms that could be meningitis, call 999 or go to A&E immediately. The NHS guide to the MenB vaccine for children is a helpful resource for parents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the MenB vaccine cause meningitis B?

No. The vaccine contains no live bacteria, so it cannot cause the infection.

Is it normal for my baby to have a fever after the MenB vaccine?

Yes, fever is common after the 8 and 12 week doses. The NHS recommends giving infant paracetamol afterwards, following the dosing advice provided.

What happens if my child missed a MenB dose?

Speak to your GP practice. Missed doses can usually be caught up without restarting the course.

Does the MenB vaccine protect against all types of meningitis?

No. It only protects against group B, which is why other routine vaccines remain important.

How long does MenB vaccine protection last?

Protection is strongest after the full course, including the booster. If you are concerned about an older child, a pharmacist can advise on whether further vaccination may help.

Can older children and adults have the MenB vaccine?

Yes. It is available privately for eligible older children, teenagers and adults, and the NHS offers it to some people with specific medical conditions.
