How is yellow fever transmitted?

yellow fever clinic

Found in regions of central America, south America, and sub-saharan Africa, yellow fever is a serious infection that occurs in around 200,000 people worldwide. It has a short incubation period and the potential of becoming very serious, causing life-long complications and even death.

The best way to protect yourself is with a simple vaccination jab. Not available via the NHS, you can get yellow fever vaccination in Camberley and Northolt from Touchwood Pharmacy.

Yellow Fever Symptoms

Symptoms of yellow fever will start to show 3-6 days after infection. The initial symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Nausea or being sick
  • Aches and pains
  • Headache
  • General feeling of being unwell

Most people will recover from the initial sickness after a few days. Others, however, may continue to become sicker as the symptoms become more severe.

At least 1 in 4 people with yellow fever will develop serious symptoms such as:

  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • Vomiting or passing blood
  • Bleeding from the eyes, ears, and nose

Up to half of people who develop severe symptoms are at risk of serious complications and even death. The disease tends to progress quickly, causing death in as little as 7-10 days.

How is Yellow Fever Transmitted?

Yellow Fever is spread through the bites of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Infected mosquitoes can be found in rural areas as well as more populated areas. They tend to bite during the day, but can still be active at night.

Yellow fever can’t be spread by coughing, sneezing, or coming into close contact with someone who is infected.

Yellow Fever Treatment and Prevention

There is no cure or dedicated treatment for yellow fever. That’s why it’s recommended to get the yellow fever vaccine if you’re going to be somewhere yellow fever is a risk. Not only is the yellow fever vaccine effective, but once you get it you’ll have lifelong protection!

Aim to get your vaccination at least 10 days before your intended date to travel.
