Chickenpox: The Horrible Experience Every Parent Needs To Know

chickenpox vaccine

Chickenpox is a common viral infection that just about everyone experiences, usually in childhood. However, just because it’s a common illness, that doesn’t mean there aren’t risks associated with it. Some groups of people can become seriously ill from chickenpox complications, many of whom are otherwise healthy.

That’s why those who haven’t had the chickenpox are recommended to have the proven and effective chickenpox vaccine. When both doses are administered correctly, you can have lifelong protection against infection.

What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes an itchy rash with small, fluid-filled blisters that last from 5-10 days. The first symptoms will start to appear 10-21 days after the initial exposure to the virus.

In addition to the itchy rash, people with chickenpox may experience fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, and headache. The symptoms will clear up on their own in most people, but in some cases the rash can become severe enough to develop in the throat, eyes, and genital areas.

Why Get the Chickenpox Vaccine?

Many people today still believe that chickenpox is a mild disease that’s almost like a rite of passage for children. In fact, for years parents would host ‘chickenpox parties’ where they would expose their children to the virus with the hopes of getting the infection over with.

Now that there is an effective vaccine, no one has to go through the discomfort of chickenpox. Once vaccinated, people who are at a higher risk will be protected as well. Chickenpox tends to be more severe in adults than children and adults are more likely to develop complications. Other groups that should avoid chickenpox exposure are pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
